Multiphasic uptake of D-glucose by an oligotrophic marine bacterium

چکیده

Uptake of D-glucose in the range 2.5 X lOP9 M to 4.0 X I O ~ M by an oligotrophic marine bacterium, LNB-155, could be represented by 4 phases of a single, multiphasic mechanism. Other kinetic models did not give a good fit. Sharp transitions occurred at about 1.6 X 1OV6 M, 10-5 M and 2 X 10-4 M. Values for K, and V,,, increased regularly upon transition to higher phases. Multiphasic uptake mechanisms in LNB-155 indicate adaptation to living in environments with fluctuating levels of D-glucose. These observations are consistent with the hypothesis that pelagic marine bacteria experience considerable fluctuations in nutrient concentration in their microenvironment.

Anthracene degradation by an oligotrophic bacterium isolated from refinery soil

Anthracene is a widespread environmental pollutant with carcinogenic and genotoxic properties. Biodegradation is a simple, cost-effective and safe technique to clean-up contaminated environments. The aims of this study are isolation and characterization of an oligotrophic bacterium with the ability to degrade anthracene and the assessment of in vitro biodegradation process. For this purpose pet...

Substrate uptake and utilization by a marine ultramicrobacterium.

A facultatively oligotrophic ultramicrobacterium (strain RB2256) isolated from an Alaskan fjord by extinction dilution in seawater, was grown in batch culture and under single- and dual-substrate-limitation of alanine and glucose in a chemostat. The nature of the uptake systems, and the uptake kinetics and utilization patterns of alanine and glucose were investigated. Glucose uptake was inducib...

Multiphasic Kinetics for D-Glucose Uptake by Assemblages of Natural Marine Bacteria

D-Gl~cose-6-[~H] uptake kinetics for marine microbial assemblages were multiphasic when the kinetics were determined over a broad concentration range (10-'M to I O ~ M). Maximum uptake velocity (V,,,,) and the sum of half saturation constant (K,) and ambient glucose concentration (S,), (K, + S,), increased gradually as the range of glucose concentration was increased. In all seawater samples ex...

Oligotrophic Bacteria Enhance Algal Growth under Iron-Deficient Conditions.

A Halomonas sp., a marine halophilic and oligotrophic bacterium, was grown on exudates of Dunaliella bardawil. The bacteria increased the solubility of Fe, thereby enhancing its availability to the algae. As a result, the algal growth rate increased. Because of these syntrophic relations, growth of the marine alga D. bardawil was facilitated at Fe levels that would otherwise induce Fe deficienc...
